What is Digital Library

Digital Library is a library in which data is stored in digital formats (such as print, microform, or unlike other media) and can be accessed by computer. Content can be stored locally, or accessed remotely. This term was first used in 1994 to the NSF/NSF. DARPA/ WAS popularized by nasa digital library initiative.

You must know that our country is becoming a very fast digital India, the government is coming up with new new apps, schemes, facilities for the public every day to mitigate the problems of the people and also save time. For example, digital Locker, Digital Payment, Digital Signature, etc., the government has now come before us with another new service called Digital Library.

The digital library is not limited to a particular location the user can get their information from anywhere on their computer screen using the Internet.

• The digital library user does not need to go to the library physically, people around the world can get digital information through an internet connection.
• The digital library can be accessed anytime 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.
• The same resource can be used by many users at the same time.
• The digital library provides access to very rich content in a more structured way i.e. we can access a particular book from catalogs and then a particular chapter.
• The user is able to use any search term for the word or phrase of the entire collection.
• An exact copy of the original can be made at any time without any deterioration in quality.
• Traditional libraries are limited by storage space. Digital libraries have the ability to store a lot of information, because digital information requires very little physical space to keep them
• A particular digital library can provide links to any other resource of other digital libraries very easily.
• The cost of maintaining a digital library is much lower than in traditional libraries. A traditional library has to spend large sums of money for paying for employees, maintenance of books, rents and additional books. The digital library removes these fees.
